oh what an update
so, since my last update, i've
- seen the wizard of oz for the first time in my life
- saw Wicked for free for the first time in my life ($92 tickets!!! for FREE!!!)
- planned and organized an entire Annual Social Event for my company, while trying to sluff off the demands of my boss (they're kinda outrageous requests sometimes)
- got my Menigitis C vaccine
- was merch girl!!
If you've never seen the musical Wicked, I suggest you go now. it is FANTASTIC!!! good thing people made me watch 'the wizard of oz' beforehand, otherwise i wouldn't have understood some things in the show as much....it was killer. i loved it. and i loved having my free seats that were amazing seats to see an amazing show.....oh it was fantastique!!! the girl who played Elphaba (the role i would kill to play someday) wasn't as strong as i would have liked, but then again i'm comparing her to the great Idina Menzel, who is my idol, and who still keeps ignoring my friend requests on myspace.......but what can you do?
Other than that i've been insanely busy at work, planning this Christmas party that is taking place tonight....i'll let you know how it goes!!
i was really stressed yesterday, but that's because of work and pms, and so i went to the gym and raged on the punching bag and now i feel better.
oooo note to self: ask for punching bag and gloves for christmas.....!
And now for this menigitis thing. As you may recall, my friend Karen was diagnosed with Meningitis earlier last year and almost died. she had to learn how to walk and talk again. she is the kindest person in the world, and it sucks that it had to happen to her. BUT she pulled through!!
Unfortunately for a 23 year old man newly arrived in Canada from St. Lucia, he wasn't so lucky.
He went to Crews/Tangos (my local gay clubbing spot) on the weekend on November 17 and 18, then was admitted to the hospital on the 21st with his first symptoms (extremely high fever, nausea, stiffness) and died five days later.
I never knew this young man, but since I was at the club on the 18th getting drunk and celebrating Andrea's 29th birthday, it was suggested that I get my vaccine, for free, on my day off (the 1st of December, which i had already booked off months before)
Meningitis is spread most commonly through sharing saliva, so anyone that shares smokes, drinks, lipbalm, kisses, etc. are more at risk than i am.....since i do none of those things. But this vaccine is $80 through your doctor, so i took advantage of the free-ness (which we all know i love to do)
turns out that they (health authorities) wanted the 400-500 patrons that frequented that particular bar on that weekend to all get the shot.
how did i find out?
because of the news truck parked outside Crews when we showed up for kareoke/Bryce's last day of work party on the 30th.
there were flyers in the washrooms advising patrons to get their free vaccine the next day
it's scary to think about it.....you never know in the heat of the moment when you're really thirsty or really want just a little drag of a smoke and you hit up the person next to you..... do you really know what they're carrying?!? that's why i make it a point to never (well.... i really try to never) share anything except with my boyfriend.
plus, who am i gonna kiss in a gay bar? ;)
I remember having a conversation with Karen's mom after I had found out about what Karen went through, and she urged me to get the vaccine, because you never know. Meningitis steals you away very quickly, but keeps you if you're lucky.
my heart goes out to that young man that wasn't so lucky.
